I have said it before, and I will say it again. One of the best things about writing Lanabird, is the recommendations we get from other people. It is so much fun getting to go to these recommended places. We get to have the bestest time eating good food, and visiting with dear friends. That is what happened a few days ago. Robert and Janet had eaten at Taste of Home in Wylie, Texas. Robert mentioned to Janet that he thought this was a place for Lanabird. Janet told me. Robert told Ever-Lovin’ and the rest is history.
As we drove up, I immediately knew this was a place I was going to like. Any home that has a wrap around porch gets my attention. Flying flags is also a good sign.
Taste of Home is located at 302 North Ballard in Wylie. I love that it is called a “Quaint Country Eatery” . They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Do not think this is a “tea room”. There were plenty of men in the restaurant. The two men sitting next to us had been fishing that morning.
Be still my heart. How fantastic is this. In the entry is a sign offering free Bibles. Anytime a business is trying to “live out their faith”, I am thankful.
Not only was the restaurant quaint, but the food was delicious. This was Ever-Lovin’s salad. It was pretty typical, but the vegetables were crisp, and the dressing was tasty.
Janet had a plate with half a chicken salad sandwich, cheddar cheese soup, and fruit. Grapes and nuts were in the chicken salad which made the sandwich extra yummy. Janet especially loved the cheddar cheese soup that was thick and creamy.
Ever-Lovin’ got the special of the day – orange chicken. He thought he made an excellent choice.
I also ordered a half sandwich plate. For my side, I got the broccoli salad. I love, love, love broccoli salad, but do not make it for just the two of us. What a large serving of salad was on this plate.
Robert knew what to order. He had ordered the Taste of Home hamburger before, and he had his taster set to order it again. It is an Angus burger served on a grilled garlic buttered ciabatta bun. You have your choice of these steak fries or sweet potato fries. Let it be known – the hamburger is good. Next time I am going to order a hamburger. Robert says it tastes like it is made on a grill. Now I understand why fishermen and working men come to Taste of Home.
Dad’s Pecan Pie Cobbler was sweet and rich. Robert highly recommends their fruit cobblers. (They were not on the menu that day.)
I must show you this. Across the street from Taste of Home is the Thomas and Mattie Brown House. In the front garden is a statue of Mattie and Thomas Brown.
It is a large Queen-Ann style home that was built around the turn of the century. I would love to see inside this historical home.
Beautiful. Love the gardens and the wrap around porch.
Thank you Robert (and Janet) for this recommendation. We loved going to Wylie, eating at Taste of Home, and visiting with you. I hope to return to Taste of Home soon.
Blessings to you and yours,
