The television and newspapers heralded the reopening of the new and improved Dallas Farmers Market. So… These little piggies went to market.
In the shadows of Dallas skyscrapers and newly built lofts, there is evidence of the changes taking place at the Dallas Farmers Market.
But… From what I read in the Dallas Morning News I had some misconceptions. (Trust me – I realize these misconceptions could be the results of my reading skills, but…)
Misconception Number 1:
The Dallas Farmers Market is open Thursday thru Sunday.
One vendor told me she was there every day. Sometimes she has to move to the old Shed 3, but she is there daily.
The speciality food vendors were not there on the Friday when we visited the market. Evidently they are only there on Saturday and maybe Sunday.
Perhaps only half of the space in The Shed was occupied on that Friday.
Misconception Number 2:
I understood that there were only two produce vendors in The Shed. There are several vendors, and some are our old favorites. I feel badly because evidently these vendors have been open during this remodeling phase of the market.
Misconception Number 3;
There would be no “cold storage” items at the market. There are still some “cold storage” items, but for the most part the fruits and vegetables are locally grown. (If you consider Texas to be local.) It is a good thing that the produce has to be labeled with the information of where it is grown.
Pauls Sweet Roasted Corn is still at the front of The Shed.
Texas Honey from the Honeybee Guild was available on that day.
Thompson Produce continues to offer nuts, seeds, and dried fruits.
There were the Texas watermelons. I loved seeing remnants of the mural from their previous booth.
This is a transitional time of year for the market, but there was plenty of okra and vine ripe tomatoes still available.
We always love buying fresh peas and beans.
For lunch today, these little piggies enjoyed our haul – cucumbers and onions, black-eyed peas, okra and tomatoes, and cantaloupe with a slice of cornbread. Life is good.
Blessings to you and yours,
I do like that there is no parking inside The Shed – no car fumes, or worrying about getting run over, or worrying about running over others as you exit a parking space. It is a much more user friendly shopping experience.
It will also be interesting to see the market on a Saturday.
