For ever and a day, Betty and Robert had raved about the Chinese food at Szechuan in Abilene, Texas. (They used to live in Abilene, so they know all the good eating places in town.)
“It is the best Chinese food I have ever tasted. If we ever go to Abilene, we have to eat at Szechuan.” Betty would often say. Betty and Robert began going to Szechuan Chinese Restaurant when it was just a small restaurant in a building that had once been a Dairy Queen type of place. Evidently word spread quickly about the tasty food, and long lines formed to get into this little place with the much better than average Chinese food.
Byron, the chef owner of Szechuan, decided to build a larger restaurant. Not just a plain restaurant, but an impressive restaurant with beautiful landscaping, waterfalls, and a koi pond.
The sound of gurgling water greeted us as we entered the restaurant. It was so restful.
Inside there were literally walls and walls of awards.
Szechuan was named one of the top 100 Chinese restaurants in the country.
Our waitress and all the staff we met were friendly and took good care of us. Betty spoke to Byron to tell him about Robert’s death. Byron came out to our table to offer his condolences. He told us that Robert and Betty had been faithful customers since he first opened his restaurant. Just two weeks earlier, Robert had visited with Byron at the restaurant. As you can tell, Szechuan is a place where people feel like family.
Then it was time to eat. Crab Angels were stuffed with crab and herb cream cheese.
Betty highly recommended we order the Sizzling Rice Soup. It says it serves 2, but it easily feed the three of us. The rice is fried and is puffy and very crunchy. The rich broth is filled with chicken and some vegetables. At the table, they add the sizzling rice to the soup. (Dork- that would be me.) I almost forgot to take a picture. This soup is beyond delicious. I loved it!
The servings are large, and two entrees were more than enough for the three of us. In fact, we brought food home to Richardson. We couldn’t stand to leave it because it was so good. This was the beef with vegetables. Yummy!
General Tso’s Chicken was wonderful. We asked them to make it not spicy, and it had just the right amount of heat for us. We also had both white and fried rice.
It is restful to eat at Szechuan, and I highly recommend the detour.
Blessings to you and yours,
Be still my heart. I love this sentiment on the back of their shirts.
Thank you Betty for taking us to Szechuan. It was delicious.
Szechuan is located at 3425 S 1st Street in Abilene.
