Recently it dawned on me. I have been reviewing hamburger “joints” in Dallas, and I have forgotten to tell you about one of my favorite diners that is right here in Richardson, Texas. My neighborhood. What a shame.
Del’s Charcoal Burgers has been in Richardson for as long as I can remember, and we have been eating at Del’s for as long as I can remember. It has changed hands over the years, but it is still the same.
Del’s Charcoal Burgers has been serving delicious burgers for over fifty years. The present owners consider Del’s an institution. The decor is vintage Texas, and the charcoal burgers remind you of burgers of your youth.
Like the 1960’s? Then this is the decor for you. A life-size cutout of John Wayne greets you.
You order from an original Dr. Pepper menu board.
James Dean and Marilyn Monroe on the bathroom doors make me smile.
Be still my heart. This is one of the main reasons I love Del’s – homemade root beer in a frosty mug. I like it. I love it. Ice glazes the inside of the mug, and it is beyond delicious.
The burgers are lip-smacking good. Angus beef grilled over charcoals with all the fixin’s. Grilled buns and grated cheddar cheese are always a plus in my book. Yummy!
The chili cheeseburger with grilled onions and homemade chili is often my choice. It does not disappoint. I like it. I love it. For my taste, the fries could be a little crisper.
But, the onion rings get high marks. (We almost devoured the onion rings before I remembered to take a picture.) They also serve tatter-tots.
Del’s is a tiny diner, and it gets very crowded around lunch time – the lines are long. If possible, try to go early or later for lunch. They open at 10:30 a.m. and are now open at night until 9:00 p.m.
Blessings to you and yours,
Del’s Charcoal Burger is located near old downtown Richardson at 110 S. McKinney Street. It is near Central Expressway (U. S. Highway 75) and Main Street (Beltline Road).
