We went to visit Andrews, Texas over the weekend for the city-wide reunion. It really wasn’t one of “my years” for a reunion, but I like to go home each year. It is hard for me to explain, but I yearn to return to Andrews. Perhaps it is because I have such fond memories of growing up there.
Some people do not understand this, but I love, love, love, big sky. Did I say how much I love big sky? I love big sky!
This is Lake Park (I guess that is its name??) in the center of town. It was a caliche pit that they made into a pond, but they call it a lake. Looks a lot better than a hole in the middle of town. A sunset in Andrews can make me bawl-eyed.
Andrews was a booming oil town during the 1950’s and 1960’s, and they are still drilling.
If I remember correctly, at one time Andrews County was the leading producer of oil/gas in the world. I could be wrong about that, but a lot (in 1965 they celebrated the one billionth barrel) of oil and gas was/is pumped out of the fields in Andrews County. On our way home we noticed, many of the pump jacks were doing their thing.
I’m a sucker for windmills. This one is actually on the edge of town.
On the Odessa highway, Andrews has a cross. It is nowhere near the size of the one in Groom, Texas, but it does pay honor to our Lord.
FYI: These are tumbleweeds. Just thought you needed to know. True story! They use to make Christmas trees out of tumbleweeds. They would stack them and spray paint them. I guess you would say, necessity is the mother of…. I still love to hear Eddy Arnold sing Drifting Along With the Tumbling Tumbleweeds.
Efforts are being made to beautify downtown Andrews.
Many nice well-cared-for homes have been built.
On Broadway there is a Veterans Memorial. It is wonderful. Daddy’s and Ever-Lovin’s names are listed on the granite panels. Makes me proud!
People drive out of their way to eat steak fingers at Buddy’s. Finger lickin’ good!
This sign says a lot about Andrews. When it was first placed out on the Big Springs highway, it read – “Andrews Loves God, Country, and Supports Our Government.” Then the windfall profits tax was imposed, and the city fathers changed the sign to read – “Supports Free Enterprise.” Guess they told them!
I have more to show and tell, but it will have to wait.
It was a good weekend, and it was good to go home.
Blessings to you and yours.
