When searching for places to eat in Houston, we came across another recommendation from Guy Fieri of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Channel. Greek food appeals to us (We miss Opa’s.) and thought we would give Niko Niko’s a try.
First indication that this is a popular diner/dive was the parking lot. We couldn’t find a parking space. Finally we lucked out and were able to park. From what we understand, Niko Niko’s is always busy. I do understand why. The food is fresh tasting and delicious.
The line was literally out the door (And was out the door the entire time we were there), but since you order at the counter, it moved quickly unless some dorks (like us) did not know what to order. Really we did okay, but bought more food than we needed since we felt rushed. (Do you understand what I mean?)
Cute cashier was helpful, and didn’t make us feel like dorks – well maybe he is laughing at us.
I wanted a side dish of tabuli (their spelling), but for three dollars more than my meal without rice, I got this. It was fantastic, and I loved it. Tabuli is about the amount of parsley. I like a lot of parsley, and this tabuli had plenty of parsley and was fresh and flavorful. This could have been a meal. See the pita chips and pita bread. Yummy, yummy, yummy.
The chicken shish kabob was okay – not bad mind you -, but I would have rather had the chicken kabobs (which were good) without the Tzatziki sauce poured over them. Personal preference. I like to dip the kabob into the sauce. I am sure I could order the sauce on the side next time.
Ever-Lovin’ was more than pleased with his Gyro Platter. Great tasting meat with tomatoes, onions, and a rice and potato dish. Again, the pita bread gets hight marks. It was delicious.
The Chicken Avgolemono soup (chicken, lemon, rice and vegetables) was very tasty. One year it was voted “Best in Houston.” by the Houston Press. A cup of this soup would have been fine with all the other food we ordered, but a smaller serving was not a choice.
If we lived in the Montrose neighborhood in Houston, I know we would frequent Niko Niko’s. Hard to believe food this fresh comes from a small diner/dive like this.
Blessings to you and yours,
Thank you Guy for the recommendation. We were too full to try the loukoumades (Greek honey balls). Maybe next time.
