Oreo Cookie Balls

True confession – I am not a huge fan of cake balls.  I know the rest of the world loves cake balls, and gobble them up by the fistfuls.  BUT – So many of the cake balls I have eaten were gummy and mushy.  It is not a taste thing.  It is a texture thing.  With that announcement out of the way, I have to admit that I “sort-of” like Oreos. We seldom buy them, but there are childhood memories associated with the dark chocolate cookies that sandwich the rich white filling.  (Yes, I open the cookie, lick the icing until it is gone, and then dunk the chocolate cookies into milk.  Sweet Mother of Pearl – that is divine.)

Enough of that.  When I saw the Oreo Cake Balls on Pinterest the recipe caught my attention.  Oreos were mixed with cream cheese and then dipped in chocolate.  What is not to like?

Then I went to the grocery story, and there was a display touting this recipe.  I walked slowly by the display, but I didn’t stop.

BUT –  I kept thinking about the Oreo Cake Balls.  They appeared to be so easy, and perhaps the cookies wouldn’t be as gummy as a cake and icing mixture.  I made up my mind – I wanted to try them.

SO – The next time I walked by the display, I quietly slipped a package of Oreos into the basket.  (Every-Lovin’ laughed, “I saw you eyeing the Oreos last week.”  Little did he know that I had plans for this bag of cookies.)

Oreo Cakeballs

Who stole a cookie from the cookie bag?  You know who!  I used the entire package of Oreos (minus 1) .

Oreo Cakeballs

Before you begin, soften a package of cream cheese.

Oreo Cakeballs

Place the Oreos in the bowl of the food processor.  This is another time when it is handy to have a food processor.

Oreo Cakeballs

Finely chop the Oreos.

Add the cream cheese to the bowl with the cookie crumbs.

Pulse together until the mixture forms a ball.  Ta-da-a-ah.  That is it – Well almost.

Oreo Cakeballs

The recipe on Pinterest called these Oreo Cake Balls, but on the Nabisco website, they are called Oreo Cookie Balls.  I think that is a better name.

With a scoop or a teaspoon form small balls.  You might need to roll them in your hands so they will be round.

When you have finished making the little balls of dough, place the tray of cookie balls in the refrigerator for at least thirty minutes. (Or you can place the tray in the freezer for about 10 minutes.)

After the cookie balls have chilled, melt chocolate wafers in the microwave.  I used about 1 1/2 cups of dark chocolate wafers, but any flavor (milk chocolate or white chocolate)  will work.  Microwave the chocolate for 30 seconds.  Stir.  Microwave an additional 30 seconds and stir again.  If the chocolate is not melted, continue microwaving until the chocolate is melted.

Oreo Cakeballs

Use a toothpick and a fork to dip the Oreo Cookie Ball into the chocolate.  Some recipes call these Oreo Truffles, and I can understand why.

Oreo Cakeballs

Do NOT do this.  I placed the cookie balls on wire cooling racks.  The chocolate stuck to the metal.  Next time I will put down wax or parchment paper.  It would work better.  As you can see, my cookie balls are not perfect.  They are rustic, but do not be misled -These cookie balls are delicious, and they are so easy to make.

Oreo Cakeballs

Be still my heart.  I like the Oreo Cookie Balls so much better than cake balls.  They are not as mushy as cake balls.  One part of me wishes I had never made them because they are so yummy.  Not only are they yummy!  They are rich.  You will feel like you have eaten a truffle.

Store these little gems of goodness in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to a week.  I doubt they last that long.

Blessings to you and yours,

How do you eat an Oreo?  Now, I eat mine as cookie balls.  These will be going on our Christmas dessert table.

On the Nabisco website, there are so many cute versions of this cookie ball.  Click Here to see how darling these little cookie balls can be.  I love the white chocolate snowmen.
