Heads-up…. This is the weekend for the 58th Annual Greek Food Festival right here on Hillcrest and Alma Roads in Dallas, Texas. The festival began as a ladies bazaar at the Greek Orthodox Church that was on Swiss Avenue. I remember that it was many moons ago when we literally stumbled upon the festival on Swiss Avenue, and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon. Since that day, we have tried to make it a point to attend the festival each year.
For the past few years, the festival has taken credit cards. It makes it easier to spend money.
What fun. There was an “olympic runner” running through the festival.
You must purchase coupons to spend on the food items.
The lines are long, but they move rather quickly. The food is worth the wait. All of the Greek favorites – gyro sandwich, souvlaki sandwich, lamb sliders, loukaniko sandwich, feta bites, dolmathes, Greek fries, Greek salad, pastitsio, spanakopita, and tiropita are offered. Plus there are so many choices of pastries. True confession – I do not have pictures of the food. What was I thinking or not thinking? That is why we go. The food is so delicious. Just trust me on this. This festival continues to be so successful because of the food.
I forgot about taking pictures of the food because… First Ever-Lovin’ and I got separated when he went to buy souvlaki while I bought a gyro. When we finally reconnected, he had exciting news.
My favorite nurse in the whole wide world was there with her sweet family. Nurse Nikki’s husband is Greek. They even had a second wedding in Greece. I no longer get to see Nikki because she retired to be a full time mother. I forgot all about food pictures because I was so excited to see her. Seeing Nikki was the best surprise. It made my night!
There is so much entertainment at the festival. Dance groups perform regularly.
There were also several different bands that played for our enjoyment. They were really good!
I love the cooking demonstrations.
At 8 o’clock they were making paximadia – which is similar to biscotti. I will try them and let you know. They do not look difficult to make, but you have to bake them three times.
Then I saw Pam. Pam worked with me at Brentfield. At one time, she was in charge of the festival, but she says she has turned it over to some younger folks. This morning a picture of her was in the Dallas Morning News. It was a picture of her baking for the festival. I mentioned to Ever-Lovin’ that I always enjoy seeing her. When we got there, I searched for Pam, but did not find her. I thought maybe she wasn’t there, but Sweet Mother of Pearl, as we were leaving, there she was. It is always so good to see her.
This was a wonderful night. The weather was perfect, the food was delicious, the entertainment great, and I got to visit with dear friends.
Blessings to you and yours,
The Greek Food Festival will also be open on Saturday September 27, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. On Sunday the 28th it will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Oh, if you have never toured the Greek Orthodox Church building, it is highly recommended. The church is opened for tours during the festival.
