For those of you new to Lanabird, let me introduce you to Mercy Street. Mercy Street is a faith based ministry to share God’s love in the neighborhood of West Dallas. The staff, mentors, and coaches of Mercy Street strive to create change in this community by personal involvement primarily with the children. Each child is paired with a mentor. Most of the staff live in the area. Weekly Bible studies, sports activities, and a bicycle repair shop all minister to the children. Recently Mercy Street Church began having services in West Dallas. The Living Stones and Men’s Bible Fellowship Classes of First Baptist Church Richardson first learned of this inspiring ministry through Jill – a friend of our Friend BB. We were asked to furnish a meal once a month for the middle school Bible study. We have been blessed through our association with all who are involved with Mercy Street.
Sunday was an exciting time at Mercy Street. The summer college interns had arrived that day, and they were taking a tour along with their families. I think most of these college students are from Texas A&M University. These young people are eager to learn and be involved with city missions. I am sure their families were anxious to know what their children would be doing this summer.
Carlton, the associate director was enthusiastically leading the tour. I loved when he shared how God had blessed this ministry. I had heard the story of the building being leased to Mercy Street for 99 years at $1.00 a year, but I did not know that the athletic field was later leased to them for 99 years for $1.00 a year. People of Dallas realize that this group has the right ideas for transforming this community.
One of the primary tasks of the interns this summer will be to provide leadership during summer camps.
This looked like a fun camp for the girls.
One of the new interns was wearing this T-shirt with a favorite verse from Jeremiah 29:11. Plans to give hope and a future for this neighborhood is what they will be sharing this summer. What a blessing!
Blessings to you and yours,
