I saw it coming and was truly amazed that downtown Plano, Texas would be getting a Lockhart Smoke House. Yes, the same Lockhart Smoke House that is in the Bishop Arts District of Oak Cliff. The same Lockhart Smokehouse that was in Texas Monthly’s list of the 5o Best BBQ Joints in the World.
When Carolyn, Minetta, and I visited downtown Plano in February, they were working on the Lockhart Smoke House. Sweet Mother of Pearl! I could not believe what I was seeing. Lockhart Smoke House was coming to Plano. Recently I drove past the Lockhart Smoke House about 1:30 in the afternoon, and the restaurant was open, but… There was a sign on the window informing patrons that they had sold out of meat, but they would have more meat at 6:00. Wow! Then MarshaChristmas wrote and said she had been, and I should go. (She beat me – but I do love her recommendations!) Needless to say – Going to Lockhart Smoke House has been on my “Want to Do” list.
Number Two Son and his sweet wife Jenny invited Ever-Lovin’ and me to dinner. They asked where we would like to go, and I mentioned that I had been wanting to go to Lockhart Smoke House. They said, “Let’s do it!” Yea!
Wood, Fire, Meat, Beer – That just about says it all. The metal letters are great.
As you can tell, this is not a large establishment. There is a line to the counter where the meat is cut to order. Along one wall is the long bar. I love the duct light fixture over the bar.
The meat is priced by the pound, and it is wrapped in white butcher paper. Lockhart Smoke House serves the world famous Kreuz Market Sausage (from Lockhart, Texas) and it is priced by the link. I do not believe Lockhart Smoke House has any links to the smoke houses in Lockhart, Texas, but rather they aim to emulate these legendary establishments.
This was our pile of meat. We tried the brisket, ribs, and Kreuz Market sausage. Lockhart Smoke House is the only place to get this sausage in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. That alone is reason enough to go to this BBQ joint. Inside the snappy casking is moist delicious sausage.
The spare ribs were meaty, tender, and had good flavor.
The brisket was oh so good. It had a nice smoky crust, and was tender, juicy, and…. It is hard to find words that describe something this delicious. The meat is served with no forks or knives, and they do not encourage using sauce. Really meat this good does not need sauce, but the Plano location did have sauce available.
Sides are also offered to compliment the meat. The potato salad was our least favorite – it was a little bland. The coleslaw was different and had a spicy kick to it. We liked it The baked beans were the table favorite. They also had some heat to them, and the addition of chunks of brisket really impressed.
To complete the Central Texas vibe, Heath Webb entertained us with live (as opposed to dead??) music. What fun!
Be still my heart. It is hard to believe that we now have a BBQ house of this caliber within easy driving distance from Richardson. It is understandable why it was on the list of the 50 Best BBQ Joints in the World (Texas Monthly). We will be back – for sure!
Blessings to you and yours,
Thank you Number Two Son and Jenny for taking us to Lockhart Smoke House. I liked it. I loved it. I want more of it!
