ADK Meeting – Emergency Preparedness and Easter Gifts for the Nursing Home

Emergency preparedness.  I had heard the term.  I had heard of people stockpiling food.  I had heard of survivalists, but…. Honestly! I  I tend not to want to be an alarmist.  You know – The gloom and doom.  Focusing on what might happen.  Still – there is a point where it is probably prudent to plan for emergencies. I had a child from New Orleans after Katrina. (They came to Dallas to stay with relatives.)  A house in our neighborhood burned.  Cathy, Caitlyn and Nana were packed and ready to evacuate when there were fires in the Lost Pines of Bastrop.  Tornadoes are a threat in North Texas.  Bad things do happen, and whatcha gonna do when things happen?

That is what Mr. Jess Wade who is the Health and Human Services Emergency Volunteer Program Coordinator in Dallas County talked to the ADK members about during our meeting.  He was not an alarmist.  He just suggested some common sense steps we can take to plan ahead for an emergency.  Suggestions such as a “Grab and Go” bag that has some basic supplies.  In that bag, would be some cash (ATMs might not work.), important phone numbers, and some basic supplies.  He left us a packet to help us begin.  His talk was very interesting and informative.  Karen had heard him speak and was so thankful he could come to our meeting.  He will come to speak to your organization if it is in Dallas County.  Contact him at jess.wade@dallascounty.org.  He also trains volunteers to help the community in case there is an emergency.

Each month the members of Alpha Delta Kappa have an altruistic project.  Martha does such an excellent job of planning for our projects.  This month we brought toiletries to give to patients in a nursing home.

Colorful sacks and Easter candy (chocolate bunnies) were furnished for us to use.DSC_9460

We added our toiletries and the chocolate bunnies to the the sacks.  By the end of the night, we had two plus boxes full of gifts to be taken to the nursing home.

It was a good night.  Good friends.  Good fellowship.  Good information.  And a good altruistic project.  Life is good.

Blessings to you and yours,
