Here is the tale of how the Living Stones Bible Fellowship Class got to party at Babe’s Chicken Dinner House.
In December, First Baptist Church Richardson actually cancelled Bible Study Fellowships on two Sunday mornings during the holidays. We had also had the terrible ice storm during December when people were unable to attend church.
For the first Sunday of 2014, Candy (our Learn Pastor) challenged each class to top their highest attendance in Bible Study. We were so out of touch, that we did not promote this effort, but…. On that first Sunday of the New Year, low and behold, we had missed each other so much, we all showed up for Bible Study. You got it! We had a high attendance Sunday, and the prize was a class party at Babe’s Chicken Dinner House. Wow! All because we love each other so much, and love to be together to study and worship.
Babe’s Chicken Dinner House has been a favorite for as long as I can remember. It is the type of place you can take out-of-towners for a taste of down-home Texas cooking. By some of the more recent additions of Southern style cooking to open in the area, Babe’s may seem somewhat outdated, but they still serve delicious food at reasonable prices. At one time, Southern Living magazine named Babe’s fried chicken as some of the best in the South. Yummy!
First they brought out salad, but it is nothing to write home about – iceberg lettuce with a little oil and vinegar dressing. BUT… drum roll please! Then they served the biscuits. Sweet Mother of Pearl. These are some of the best biscuits in the world – or maybe the universe. They are light and have a nice crust. Best of all – there is honey and sorghum on the table for you to add a little sweetness. These could easily be dessert.
Eighteen of us enjoyed our party at Babe’s, and this is the plate of fried chicken, chicken fried steak, and chicken strips that was brought to our table. The humongous platter was majorly full.
Then there are the sides. Lots and lots of sides. You would think Aunt Nela was serving Sunday dinner. The corn is my absolute favorite. I could easily make a meal of just the corn. It is crisp and slightly creamed. I like it. I love it.
Okay, I have no pride. This is my plate with chicken, biscuit, and all the vegetables – pinto beans, green beans, mashed potatoes. gravy (I know it is not a vegetable), and of course THE CORN. The vegetables are served family style, and they will bring more if you need/want them.
At the end of the meal, they brought out banana pudding for us to share. So good! Babe’s also makes their own pies. We have been known to bring slices of pie home.
Okay, the Albers Men’s Class did not win a party. They just couldn’t stand it that the Living Stones were going to Babe’s and they weren’t. So, they had their own party at another table, and they paid for their own meals. Babe’s is that good.
Happy Trails! We will meet at Babe’s again.
Blessings to you and yours,
We went to Babe’s Chicken Dinner House in Garland on Beltline Road and North Garland Avenue. There are several others in the area, and Bubba’s across from SMU on Hillcrest was the original.
Thank you Candy for a wonderful treat. The food was delicious, and the company the best. I love these girls.
