“Oh, you need to go to Gecko Hardware. It is your kind of place.” Okay, I love recommendations. So, Ever-Lovin’ and I head off to Gecko Hardware in Lake Highlands. It is in the Northlake shopping Center at Northwest Highway and Ferndale.
Lake Highlands is s fantastic community. It is like a town within the city of Dallas. I loved teaching in this area at Wallace Elementary for many years. From what I hear, many of the students we taught have moved back to the Lake Highlands area, and with this young blood comes an interest in urban homesteading, and eco-living. Gecko Hardware combines a traditional True-Value Hardware store with an emphasis on green living.
Yes, they sell chicks, and they are the rage.
Look at these little chicks. They are so cute. You can also buy chicken coops, food, and anything else you might need to raise chickens.
On weekends there is a roster named George at Gecko’s. At one time his name was Queen Catherine, but then they realized he was a she, and roosters are not allowed in the Dallas city limits. Queen Catherine was returned, renamed, and has become a favorite with the customers. Just this past week they took George to a farm outside the city limits so he could be outside and do what roosters do. They hope for him to visit on the weekends since he is so popular.
Many of the displays at Gecko’s have a vintage vibe to them.
This is the place to come for canning supplies.
Are these not too cute? – corrugated metal containers. I like them Of course they have plenty of galvanized buckets on their shelves. I am drawn to this metalware.
Jam and other locally made items are offered for sale.
All-natural cleaning supplies fill one shelf.
These passive irrigation pots were new to me. You bury them in the ground and then fill them with water to water your plants.
Look at the door mat made from recycled flip-flops.
Honestly, 3/4 of the store is a traditional hardware store where the shelves are filled with tools, cabinet hardware, paint, and other hard to find parts. It is the best of two worlds.
Outside is the garden center with herbs and other Texas-friendly plants.
Be still my heart. I so want a fairy garden. I even have a container that I am taking to Gecko’s. Fairy gardens are filled with miniature plants and small objects. Miss Jane the fantastic gardner has fairy gardens, and after seeing hers, I have always wanted to have one.
The little metal houses and arbors are charming.
They were right. Gecko Hardware is my kind of place. There are unique gifts and decorator items to buy along with an excellent assortment of traditional hardware items. Plus there is an emphasis on green living. I like that, and I will be back.
Blessings to you and yours,
On their website it says, “From functional to funky – we make green living fun.!” That they do.
