On June 17, Marsha Christmas – my cheerleader – forwarded me this: “With grace of Southern hospitality Ellen’s Southern Kitchen shines | Dallas-Fort Worth Restaurant Reviews and News – Dining News for Dallas, Texas – GuideLive – The Dallas Morning News.” “Lanabird, Have y’all been here? Sounds very yummy.”
NO, I had not been to Ellen’s Southern Kitchen. If fact, I had never heard of Ellen’s Southern Kitchen, but I had to check it out. First, I read the entire review from the Dallas Morning News that was written by Eve Hill-Angus. Oh, after reading the review, I knew – I had to go to Ellen’s Southern Kitchen.
Ellen’s Southern Kitchen is located in the West End at 1718 N. Market Street. Since people like us in the burbs awaken before the city dwellers, we were there early and got to park on the street. There are parking lots nearby also, or you can take the DART train to this area. Do you think Ever-Lovin’ is serenading the parking meters? Looks like it doesn’t it? (FYI: He approved this picture. I think it is too funny.)
We dug deep into the bottom of my purse for coins, but … The fact that these parking meters take credit cards amazed me. You can tell I don’t get out much.
The crisp black awnings topped the windows at Ellen’s. It does have a southern flair.
Inside the restaurant the walls are papered with black and white – upscale southern. This is an intimate restaurant. (I think that is restaurantese for small.) A group of 11 came for breakfast, and they had to seat them at three seperate tables.
Be still my heart. I do love a restaurant that serves breakfast all day. (Remember – it is my favorite meal of the day.)
Ever-Lovin’ and I share. We are good that way. This is the Big Ol’ Pancake Breakfast – eggs, sausage, bacon, hash browns, and two pancakes. I loved everything about it. I did have to ask for another plate for the pancakes since I don’t want syrup on my eggs. They were nice and brought me a second plate.
The first thing Ever-Lovin’ pointed out on the menu was their slogan and web address – grits rule.com. Okay, I admit it. One way we judge a restaurant is by their grits.
Grits we had to order. Sweet Mother of Pearl. On the menu this is called Poached Eggs and Grits – cheese grits, two poached eggs with hollandaise sauce, spinach, tomatoes, and crumbled bacon. It was beyond wonderful.
It took us almost two months to go to Ellen’s Southern Kitchen, but I do not think it will take us that long to return – even if it is downtown. I do want to try lunch. Hear tell they make a “killer chicken fried steak”.
Blessings to you and yours,
Thank you Marsha Christmas for the recommendation. It was yummy.
