Being with Super Sister, Cousin Janie, and her daughter Amy in Stephenville was FUN. Janie’s grandparents were long time Erath County residents. I believe her grandfather was a principal in the Rocky Point community which made him a rather important person. I remember going to their home as a child.
On Amy’s list of things to do, was a visit to the old home place.
I loved traveling the country roads and hearing Janie’s stories.
This was the site of Janie’s family’s old home place. An outline of the foundation is still there.
Be still my heart. I love the old windmill.
Every home had a cellar. I remember our Grandmother being worried about a home not having a cellar.
Some of the old out buildings are still standing. I can not remember for sure, but I think this was a corn crib.
I believed Janie mentioned that hired help would live in this little building. Can you imagine?
Out in the middle of the field was this tree. It is called the “Marrying Tree”. Couples would know when the preacher was coming to town, and they would meet at the “Marrying Tree” to be married. Love this story.
Rocky Point Church was a small community church in the area. In recent years, it has grown and ministers to many students from Tarleton State University in Stephenville. Sometime ago this little church needed a parking lot. There was an elderly gentleman who was a member of the congregation. He lived in a small frame house down the road from the church. It was a shock when he wrote the church a check for the parking lot. I love this story. Many times people do not want change, but he gave so that the church could grow.
Being in the country was restful and heartwarming. There are sweet memories of wonderful times at the old home place.
Blessing to you and yours,
Thank you Janie for all the interesting stories.
