When researching top rated restaurants in Houston, The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation appeard on more than one list. Remember the 30 Essential Texas Restaurants to Visit Before You Die – The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation was on that list. Allison Cook’s Top 100 Restaurants in Houston lists The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation at #34 – almost in the top third of all restaurants in Houston. Ever-Lovin’ and I thought we should check it out.
First let me explain the name – The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation.
In this restaurant, “Mamma” Ninfa Laurenzo first introduced fajitas to the city of Houston, and before long it seemed as if the entire nation was eating fajitas. The other Ninfa’s restaurants were franchised and are part of a chain – Not so with The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation. The Original Ninfa’s that was established in 1973, does have new owners and a acclaimed chef (Alex Padilla). They appear to continue he tradition of excellent food.
Be still my heart. We got to eat in the original dining room. I liked it. I loved it. What a great feeling to experience history.
All of the staff were friendly and prompt. Not a glitch one. Sweet Mother of Pearl – the woodwork above the door is beyond beautiful. Looks good.
Ever-Lovin’ and I ordered the same thing – this is how Mamma Ninfa first served the tacos filled with grilled steak. (We wanted to taste the original.) Marinated outside flank steak was flat ironed grilled, sliced thin, and wrapped in an homemade flour tortillia. I tell you the truth. It doesn’t get any better than this. The steak was tender and great tasting. I loved the handmade tortillas. Plus we got fantastic queso, delicious house-made guacamole (If a menu item comes with guacamole, I generally will order it.), tasty charo beans, and rice. I even liked the rice. It had big chunks of carrots and potatoes in it.
Going to The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation was a wonderful dining experience. I want to return.
Blessings to you and yours,
Oh, the chips and two kinds of salsas were also excellent, but dork me did not take a picture. Chips and salsa are important when judging Mexican restaurants, and I wanted you to know that they were good.
