Some time ago when I was posting multiple posts about the Royal Tea, Dr. Jim mentioned that I need to post about some “real” food, not just “sissy” lady food. “You need to post about burgers,” said he.
So here it is!
First of all, I ask most of my friends their opinion on what constituted a good burger. I did research. Found out that burgers are very personal to individuals. There were varying ideas, but in general most everyone agreed that it needs good meat, mustard (some also like mayo), a grilled bun (preferably delicious), and lettuce, tomatoes, onions (I like mine grilled), and pickles. Cheese is a nice addition. Many of the surveyees wanted the post to be about “real Texas burgers, not “fancy California, New York, or fill in the blank with any other name of a state burgers”.
Recommendations included beginning at the basics at a fast food restaurant like Dairy Queen. Most of us grew up eating at “The Texas Stop Sign.” One day last week most of The Buds (friends) stopped by a DQ for a Jr. Burger. It was okay (even the Jr. Burger had lettuce, tomato, pickles, and purple onions), but the meat did not have a lot of flavor. Now the Blizzards were another story. What a treat!
The plan was to move on to an award winning burger joint. (Yes, comparing a fast food Jr. Burger with a high end burger is not fair. For the record, for the money etc. the Jr. Burger was good.)
Talk about luck! While at the beauty shop this week (getting my little bit of new hair trimmed) there was the August D Magazine, with their Best Of… issue. Best Burger – Liberty Burger. (The Mrs. had mentioned Liberty Burger earlier this summer, but she left for New Mexico before we could go.) I put Liberty Burger on my radar, and today Ever-Lovin’ and I headed toward burger freedom (whatever that means).
When you walk in, there are menu boards.
Here is what we ordered: Liberty Burgers with cheese, Sweet Potato Fries, and Big O Rings. The Sweet Potato Fries and the Big O Rings were beyond delicious. Would order again.
Be still my heart! This is one big humongous burger. Where do I start? The meat! Meat is the heart of the burger. They get their natural (never frozen) meat from “Dallas’ prime steakhouse purveyor.” Their meat is a combination of chuck, brisket and tenderloin, and it is flavorful. It doesn’t have a multitude of spices covering up its natural goodness, and I liked it. Our meat was cooked as we requested – not pink. Other meat choices include bison, turkey, and a vegetable patty.
The cheese melted into the meat perfectly. Then there was lettuce, tomatoes, purple onions, and tasty dill pickles. The custom made buns are brought in daily from a local artisan bakery that only uses American produced ingredients. Very Good! Yes, they did grill the bread. Additions to the above can include bacon, avocados, and choice of other cheeses.
The Specialty Burgers could be from other states or even other countries (The Napa, Wild West, Woodstock, South of the Burger, Amore- just to name a few). I saw normal looking folks eating some of theses unique burgers, and I have to admit – they did look good.
Liberty Burgers are pricy, but may be worth it. We do want to take the family gang some day. I think they will like it.
Liberty Burger is located at Forest at Inwood across the parking lot from the Forestwood Antique Mall. Here tell they are opening a second location on Keller Springs and maybe a couple more.
D Magazine made a good choice, but is Liberty Burger really the best burger around? I am not stopping my search for the best burger in town, and I have heard of others to try. If you have suggestions, please let me know.
Blessings to you and yours,
