I have been wanting to visit Hypnotic Donuts since before 2012. How did I first hear about this place? First son says he didn’t tell me. Maybe it was son number two or The Dallas Morning News. Who knows? All I know is that I had heard about an over-the-top donut shop called Hypnotic Donuts, and of course, I wanted to check it out.
One morning (I can’t remember when), I wanted to serve donuts to the gang, and I thought to myself, “Why not get some Hypnotic Donuts. That will be fun.” That morning I drove up and down, up and down, and up and down Preston Road north of Campbell for what seemed like an eternity. I was searching and searching for Hypnotic Donuts. Did someone hypnotize me into believing there was such a thing as a donut shop called Hypnotic Donuts? But I found the address online! (Now I know how reliable internet information can be.) As I began to head home empty handed, number one son called me on my cell – Hypnotic Donuts was no longer opened. Really? No wonder I couldn’t find it. Okay, no Hypnotic Donuts for us that day. On their website, they swore to reopen in the not so near future on the other side of Dallas on Garland Road.
Fast forward to this spring. On one of our trips to the Dallas Arboretum while driving down Garland Road, I noticed the sign – Hypnotic Donuts. “Ever-Lovin’, that’s where I have been wanting to go.” He said, “Okay”. Did we stop? No-o-o. And I continued to dream about being hypnotized by a donut.
On the birthday trip, I told the girlfriends about Hypnotic Donuts. I was on the lookout for the shop, but I missed seeing it. Then the girlfriends saw it and yelled in unison, “There it is!” I whipped big hunkin’ Tahoe around the corner (just a little too fast), and pulled into the nearest parking spot. Party! We were going to have Hypnotic Donuts to celebrate.
Eyes widened as we entered the shop. Oh,my! These are different.
Bacon and jalapenos on donuts? Interesting. (on left) Canadian Healthcare – Long John with maple frosting and real bacon. Mexico – glazed donut, vanilla frosting, fresh jalapenos and tobasco.
Here you have (left to right): (in front) Hypnotic – chocolate, caramel, and peanut butter mixed, topped with peanut butter Cap’n Crunch and pretzels. (behind) Almond to the World – chocolate sprinkles, sliced almonds and coconut. Smores– chocolate sprinkles, marshmallows, and graham crackers. Poppin Berries – strawberry frosting and crushed mixed berry Pop Tarts.
This monster is apply called Gorilla Warfare – chocolate, banana, and peanut butter fritter. We decided it tasted like a really good banana bread. Yum!
We picked: Gorilla Warfare (good choice), Apple Fritter with cream cheese and jalapenos (loved it, not too spicy), Hypnotic (okay), Jenny’s Evil Elvis (filled with peanut butter – our least favorite, too much peanut butter), Canadian Healthcare (our favorite), and Almond to the World (very good). These donuts were decadent and delicious. Be still my heart! The maple glaze on the Canadian Healthcare was oh so good! At Hypnotic Donuts, not all of the donuts are “Revolutionary”. Many “Simple and Sublime” donuts are made and sold each day. I wish we had tried some of those. When reading the reviews online, the Chicken Biscuits also gets high marks. Note to self: Next time buy “Simple and Sublime” donuts and try their Chicken Biscuits.
FYI: Hypnotic Donuts has gotten a lot of press. D Magazine, CBS 11, and the Observer named them Dallas’ Best Donuts. They were #14 on some list of America’s Best Donut Shops.
With our box of a bazillion calories in hand, we headed to the Arboretum. After we walked through the gate, we immediately found a table and began to devour our Hypnotic Donuts.
Like Sherman going through Georgia, it certainly didn’t take us long to inhale these yummy treats!
Oh, do try Hypnotic Donuts. I think you’ll like them. The service was great, and if not hypnotized, your head will be spinning from all of the out-of-this-world choices.
Love and peace,
And Blessings to you and yours,
