Weikel’s Kolaches

Serendipity: the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way —Weikel’s Bakery in La Grange, Texas was just such a place for us.

We were driving along highway 71 near La Grange, Texas  looking for a place to eat breakfast.  Hunger was beginning to set in – it was almost 10:00.  That is when we noticed a billboard for a gas station and bakery at the next exit.  Whatever!  We are not proud, and are known to eat filling station food.

Then serendipity happened – the occurrence of events in a happy way.  This was not some ordinary gas station/bakery with stale donuts.  It was the world famous Weikel’s Bakery.  This is filling station food on a high level.

We have always liked the kolaches in West, Texas, but I do believe Weikel’s kolaches are better.  Make no mistake. If we go through West, we will stop for kolaches, but if we are anywhere near La Grange, I will beg Ever-Lovin’ to go out of his way for Weikel’s kolaches. “Gourmet Magazine” even took note of these two bakery/filling stations in their March 2009 issue.

When you go (and you must), head straight for the kolaches.   Go to the back of the store, and the kolaches are on your left.   Soft sweet dough filled with fruit or cheese.  Yummy, Yummy, Yummy!  So good.  The amazing thing about Weikel’s kolaches is that they stayed soft and fresh tasting for four days.  Honest!  How do they do it?  I do not know, but I do know – Weikel’s Bakery knows how to do kolaches right.   While  you are there, you might want to also grab a delicious pig in the blanket.  Then you will have protein and a more balanced diet. (Just trying to help.)

PS: Maybe the kolaches would have lasted longer, but after four days, our six kolaches were gone.  To be honest, we worked real hard to make our six kolaches last as long as possible.  They were so good, we hated for them to be gone.
